Question
I want to remove an 18 foot long bearing wall and support the ceiling rafters using a strongback made of wood. There is adequate room in the attic for the work. Can you explain how I can support the rafters using a strongback?

Answer
Hi Ed,
The beam must be supported on each end, either on an exterior wall or interior wall.
18' is a long span, so you need to use a built-up beam of four 2"x12"
laminated together with plywood between at least two layers. all nailed (or screwed) sufficiently. Then either metal (Simpson ties) or wood pieces to go from the beam down beside each ceiling joist and well nailed.
All this of course is done BEFORE you remove the wall...

I hope this is clear enough, if not  please mail me back!!

Best of luck,

Dave
