Building Homes or Extensions/Bathroom Remodeling

Question
We are remodeling two upstairs bedrooms into a master suite. My question is about the tub's load on the joists. We intend to put the tub perpendicular to 2x10 joists, 16" OC that span 12' from outside wall to interior bearing wall. The tub's filled weight will be 553 lbs with a floor loading of 44 lbs/square foot.

Will the joist be suitable for the tub?

Answer
Joe,

Your joists are larger than they need to be for your span, and the modest tub that you describe should be no problem.  As always, it would be wise to have an experienced professional look at your situation to determine if there are any other factors that you may have missed, such as roof loads, point loads, or poor condition of existing joists.  However, on the face of it, you appear to have no problem.  Good luck with your remodeling project.  -Ted
