Building Homes or Extensions/beam

Question
I am looking at extending my kitchen into my laundry room which is possible. the only thing is if we do that we will have a support beam left running along a big portion of the ceiling. We had a builder out and quoted us on the work. My question to you is how do we get around this problem, also can it be removed, because obviously we would like a flush and flat ceiling.

Answer
Simon, certainly it can be removed.  The question becomes how much?

If there is attic above, the beam/truss can be installed above the wall to be removed once adequately tied to the ceiling joists.

If this won't work, the joists can be supported, then cut back to allow a steel beam inserted to carry the joists in the same plane.

I would really need to be able to see the problem to offer much more in the way of ideas.
