Building Homes or Extensions/structural ceiling beam

Question
I am looking at extending my kitchen into my laundry room which is possible. the only thing is if we do that we will have a support beam left running along a big portion of the ceiling. We had a builder out and quoted us on the work. My question to you is how do we get around this problem, also can it be removed, because obviously we would like a flush and flat ceiling.

Answer
Hi simon, without seeing how your existing roof and ceiling system is framed up I can't give you too much information.  But theoretically anything is "possible" with enough money and the proper contractor.  Hidden beams can be installed up inside the ceiling system in some cases.  This would involve cuttin your ceiling joists back far enough to slip the support beam up inside the attic and then the joist ends are attached to the support beam using joist hangers.  It's not too difficult especially if you remove enough drywall to provide easy access to the work area.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
