Building Homes or Extensions/Adding a window

Question
I would like to add a 4X6 window through a concrete block wall in my living room. What is the best way to open the wall and what should i use to support the opening? I know the top course of blocks has concrete filled cores. Can I use  wood in lue of a concrete lintel?

Answer
Bill, you have a few choices. A pair of 3x3x1/4 angles cut into the block bearing 6" on each side.  Ganged up 2x6 header.  Have a mason come to tooth out the sides and create a new header with block or steel.  Choice 3 is the best and will look the most professional when finished.
