Building Homes or Extensions/Drywall/ducting

Question
Hello Dan,

I am currently finishing my basement and presently ran into an issue.  Square ducting section that is extending beyond my wall.  I do not have the room to build a frame around this duct without loosing a good amount of room in this already small area.  I was wondering if it would be OK to cover the square ducting with drywall via mostly liquid nail, some sheet metal screws as well as a top nailer on larger side.  If you have any pointers they would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer
Gordon, I would not fasten drywall to the duct for sound, vibration, and other reasons.  I will guess that you are using wood framing and are not very aware of metal studs, etc.  Commercial drywall sotres have a piece called a utility angle - 25 gauge will work fine for you.  It is basically a 1 1/2x1 1/2 light weight angle iron.  Screw one to the ceiling joists with a leg hanging down.  Cut a strip of drywall to size and screw it to the upper angle.  Install another angle on the bottom edge of the drywall to receive the bottom piece of drywall.  Install an angle at the wall to carry the bottom.  Screw on the bottom.  I hope you envision what I'm saying.  The utility angles are inside corners, the drywall is the structure.  Throw on a corner bead and mud and tape.  This will really be much more simple than trying to glue to duct work, more professional, and allows you to make the furr down straight, etc.  Your duct work is probably not all that true.  I would keep the drywall about a 1/2" off the duct fo avoid vibration/drum effects.
