Building Homes or Extensions/Gas Water Heater

Question
I know someone who put a bag of fertilizer on top of their gas water heater and the heat from the exhust melted a hole in the bag (quater size). The fertilizer spilled down the exhaust hole to the burners. would this damage a water heater enough to be replaced? Thanks very much, John

Answer
John,  I'm sorry that I do not have enough chemistry background to be able to answer this one.  The vent shroud should have stopped almost all.  Any that did go down wold be laying on the burner or the "floor" of the heater.  A shop vac should be able to gather any and all.  I can't think of anything in particular that would demand early replacement.
