Building Homes or Extensions/Stairs

Question
We have built interior stairs to the attic where we will be building a bedroom.  We want a door at the bottom of the stairs coming out into the dining room.  Do we need a landing at the bottom of the stairs?

Answer
Hi dennis, generally speaking "attic" stairs do not need a landing when there is a door involved at the bottom.  However, it is more convenient to reach the doorknob if there is one. And if the attic is now a living space local codes may require a 3' landing. I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
