Building Homes or Extensions/Adding covered porch to house with vinyl siding

Question
When you add a covered porch to the front of your house that has vinyl siding, do you have to remove any of the vinyl siding from the house before you attach the ledger and rafter header boards to the house or can you attach them over the vinyl siding?

Answer
You must remove the vinyl siding to allow adequate structural connection.  The flashing and roofing require the same thing.  YOu will probably need to remove several rows above the work.  The vinyl siding will all need to be recut and the appropriate trim installed.
