Building Homes or Extensions/Creaking Walls

Question
Hi Mike

I read a question from one reader about creaking in the house and wanted to
get your advice as well. I live in a stacked townhouse with other townhouses
on either side of me. I've been here for 6 months now. I have been noticing
creaking as well in my place, and wondered what I can do about it. I had
leaking problems when I first moved in, and now this, so I am a little stressed
about it.

My question is, is nail popping a serious problem (e.g. are my walls going to
fall down)?
Does it mean that the ground is moving underneath me and the house is
settling (the condo complex is about 7 years old)? My townhouse starts on
the second floor so there is someone underneath me.
Does the creaking stop after a few years while the walls settle or can I always
expect some creaking?
I live in Canada where it is very cold in winter. Is this a climate problem? I've
only noticed it in the last few weeks.
So far I haven't had serious problems - no cracking of the dry wall (although
there is a little cracking between the wall and the baseboards). I can see
about 3 nails that are starting to come out of the walls. I just want to make
sure I am not paranoid!

Thanks

Anthony

Answer
Hey Anthony,

I live in Canada most of the year too and this problem with creaking and banging is something I would like to see first hand. I have seen it (loud bangs) on occasion due to climate change, but not wind. Your nail pops are common, although after seven years they should be less frequent.
