Building Homes or Extensions/remodeling a split foyer

Question
Hello,
We live in Raleigh, NC. in a split foyer home built in the mid 60s.  Now into retirement, we need a home with living quarters on one level.  Our split foyer is built on a hill, with about a four foot drop from front to back.  We have a steel 'I' beam under the top floor, to allow for an open den downstairs (without support posts).  We wonder if it would be possible to build a new main floor about 3 feet above the downstairs concrete floor, and then drop the attic floor down to become the new upstairs bedroom/bathroom area.  It would require moving the steel beam "upstairs" about four feet.  We don't want to disturb the roof, nor the outer walls.  I know it would be expensive, but perhaps cheaper than trying to find another house in this expensive area.   Perhaps you have some experience with this, or know someone who has tried it?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Paul,
I haven't had this experience, nor have I known of any local contractors who have. It is, howevwer doable.
I'm thinking that it would be a very expensive project! I don't know what you're looking at for new or existing home costs, but After you get some quotes from builders, you may want to reconsider.

Be sure and get at least 2 quotes...
Best of luck, Dave
