Building Homes or Extensions/Extending Concrete Porch

Question
My husband and I would like to make our concrete side porch about 30 inches or so wider than it is currently. What is the best way to go about this? My assumption is to build out with some type of block, back fill with gravel, then finish off with concrete? Am I on the right track and can you give me some more specifics?

Answer
Bonnie,  I assume an existing concrete porch.  YOu don't tell how high off the ground or where you are located.

A wall or piers will require a footing.  The footing wil need to go deep enough to get below your local frost line.  You will need to dowel or somehow tie into the existing porch slab.  Gravel or sand would be an easy way to support the new concrete, though there are other methods.  Double check your property line to make sure you can extend 30".
