Building Homes or Extensions/Stairway Landing

Question
I'm building an L-shaped interior stairway and wand to add a closet under the landing. I can't find it in a Code book but can I use 2x8's for the landing frame to gain a little more headroom? A few books I have use 2x10 but there's no reference to Code.

Answer
Todd,

The 2006 IRC (International Residential Code, in effect in many locations) allows joists down to 2x6 - this would be more than adequate for your landing.  I have seen many 2x4 landing platforms, but I don't see them explicitly allowed in the code, so go with 2x6s just in case.

Good luck with your new stair.  -Ted
