Question
im redoing my basement and want to open the entry up a bit...so i was wanting
to move a support "I" beam 3 feet the total length of the house is 40 ft with 3
posts one every 10 feet...what is your comment on moving it 3 ft or so

Answer
I'm not clear from your description if you are talking about moving the  beam or the column.  If you are talking about moving the beam, I doubt that it can be done.  If you are talking about moving one of the columns, it becomes more possible.  It must be looked at by a structural engineer.  The enlarged span may require some beam stiffening (welding on additional web plate or boxing the I beam) and the column that is relocated will need a footing which will require cutting the floor.  It may or may not require a heavier column.
