Question
Hi Dan, I'm am pouring a slab on grade foundation in western NC for my single story detached garage (20x30). I will be placing two row of 8" block and framing off that. Does code require re-bar extending out of the slab up into the block for the block to anchor to ? Thanks.

Answer
It sounds as if you are planning a level slab inside the garage.  It also sounds like you are setting the block on top of the slab.  I assume you have a foundation under this slab with reinforcing.  The bent bars should be tied in the footing steel and coming up in the block cells at 4' o.c..  I don't know your code, but I do know that Florida code requires strapping and anchoring studs to the foundation.  Your base plate will require j bolts at 4' o.c..  I suspect your inspector will want your blocks to be grout filled with horizontal steel.

I would prefer running perimeter block on the foundation and using it for the edge form for the slab.  This method would allow a sloped floor if desired.
