Building Homes or Extensions/Attic roof

Question
I have an attic over my garage that I'd like to expand the storage area by laying down some plywood. There's a 2x4 that goes from the floor of the attic to the roof ridge. It rests on a 2x4 that extends across the floor joists about half way. My question: Can the 2x4 that extends from the floor to the ridge be removed? It appears like a leftover or temp brace during construction. But I'm not sure.
Thanks for any input.
PS I do have some pictures if needed.

Answer
If there are rafters and not trusses, be careful about any excess weight on the joists.
It does sound like a temporary brace, but its hard to tell for sure.

whats  the width of the building? what is the size of rafters?
