Building Homes or Extensions/building a shed

Question
I am building a shed 16 by 16 with a gable roof. I put two 2x6x16 together for the main support. I am putting 2x4 for the rafters 16 on center. I find that the main beam tends to "sway" left to right. I thought when I put the rafters it would hold the beam steady..is this ok...hate to have that thing fall down..Ray

Answer
YOu have not completed the magic triangle.  The primary load on a rafter is vertical, but there is also a substantial outward thrust trying to push the outside bearing walls apart.  This force must be stopped, the usual method is the ceiling joist spiked to both the top plates and the rafter bottoms.  The only other normal solution is the use of trusses.
