Subject: Small patio
Question I'm laying a small patio for my sister in a small area of her garden where grass doesn't readily grow.
I have two concerns - firstly I've never laid any paving slabs before! But I have been doing some reading and have fairly good DIY skills so I should manage (the area is only 3x3 slabs of 24 inch square each!).
But my main concern is what to lay them on? I thought that sand was usual but I have read that mortar should be used?
My sister lives in Toronto where they get very harsh winters - does that have a bearing?
I'd really appreciate any pointers you could give me.
Regards,
Gavin
Answer Hi Gavin, I would use sand. Dig out the area a couple of inches deeper and then bed the patio slabs on two inches of compacted sand. That's the way I did mine five years ago and it is just as level as the day I did it. I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson. bejohnsonconsulting.com
