Building Homes or Extensions/uncaulking

Question
Hello

I have to correct a big mistake.  I caulked doors and baseboard with a silicon based caulking.  It is all rubbery now after it is dry.  Is there any way to take off this silicon bases caulking so that I can recaulk it with regular caulking?

Thank you,  Gabe

Answer
Gabe, I don't use silicone on anything important.  It may be a great product. but I can show you more failures than sucesses.  I prefer using one part polyurethanes like NP1 and Tremco products.  Baseboards and interior stuff needs painter's latex.

As to removing silicone - good luck.  The only method I know is to be very careful with razor blades.  Good caulk won't stick to silicone, so it must be removed, hopefully without destroying the substrate.  There are no chemicals or solvents that will attack silicone.  3M makes something that will soften it some and lacquer thinner will help clean surfaces.
