Building Homes or Extensions/Basement Window

Question
I am going to cut a hole in the basement foundation wall of my house for an egress window.  Four feet of concrete block is going to come out and I am concerned about what type of header to put above the window because of the weight. Would a regular wood header work or do I need to use some type of steel?

Answer
Wood will work, but it will be harder to waterproof the bearing points to prevent water and rot.  These issues will be influenced by the exterior material which you did not mention.  Pay particular attention to flashings and dealing with water issues.

It may be easier to work with steel.
