Building Homes or Extensions/adding a 3 season porch to L shaped ranch

QuestionQUESTION: What is the roof style when adding a 3 season porch to an L shaped ranch, which is cross-gabled correct- garage sets most forward on the left
I am thinking shed tied to garage gable roof with a valley into the house gable roof? If you have knowledge of how this should be done, it would be appreciated. I live in the
Chicago area, so we do get snow.
Thanks- Di
ANSWER: Hi Di,
I'm sorry, but I'm not getting a clear picture with this question.
It first sounds like you have an "L" shaped house, giving you a valley in the ell.
Then you want to add a shed roof to the garage GABLE? I'm thinking the gable would be away from the house...Help!

QUESTION: Thanks Dave,
Sorry, I am not well versed on roofs.
The home is L shaped - one story ranch.
The garage is on the left. The garage wall is about 25 ft deep. The house wall is about 30 ft across.
Both garage door and entrance to the house face east.
The garage roof is joined to the house with valleys on both sides of the garage roof.
I want to close in the area - the L- with a 3 season room.
The 3 season room would be 16w ft across the front of the house and 16ft l.
The house roof and garage roof are perpendicular to each other.
What style of roof can be used on the 3 season room?
Is that any better?
Thanks- Di
AnswerHi Again Di,
Well we're getting there!! :)
If you're building under a valley, you'll need to start on either roof and create a new valley against the other roof... the new one will be a shallower valley (less pitch) than the original. (I wish we had graphics here...)
I don't know what the pitch of your existing roof is, so its hard to determine how to tell you more...
Please mail again if needed.
