Building Homes or Extensions/addition over patio

Question
we have an exsisting concrete slab covered patio.  we would like to enclose the patio completly and add a bedroom above.  our exsisting house is single story built in 1924 with an addition built onto the back in the 90's on a cinder block foundation.  we need an extra room, but aren't sure if we can build on a concrete slab and what kind of flooring do we use to cover the concrete.  we live in northwest colorado mountains.  we thought this would be less expensive and intrusive than building over exsisting house or having to add a new foundation.  thanks

Answer
Alisa, anywhere near Dinosaur National?  I wish I had better news.

Code demands a footing around enclosed space and a simple patio slab couldn't carry 2 stories anyway.  The patio is probably sloped, and sloped enough to be uncomfortable for finished space.
