Building Homes or Extensions/earth-rammmed

Question
Hi, I live in high desert that gets a very rainy long season. I am thinking of building with earth-rammed bricks. My soil is black earth, unstable 3 meters down. Do you have suggestions and cautions for me? Thank you

Answer
Janis, I do not have any direct experience with any of the "alternative" materials.  There are many web sites that discuss some of these issues, look up:
Cob
Adobe
Straw building
Tire building

They make very interesting structures and some quite beautiful but one of the major problems is working with code officials if you are located where you need building permits and inspections.

I wish I could have been more helpful.
