Building Homes or Extensions/A new window opening in an existing brink wall

Question
We would like to add two new windows in our master bedroom on a wall where there are currently no windows.  The exterior wall is brick.  Is there a way (and how) to secure the existing bricks above while removing the bricks to make an opening for the new window or would all of the brick have to be removed?  Thank you in advance.

Answer
Lisa-

Your mason will be able to insert a steel lintel to carry the bricks over your window by removing relatively few bricks.  Keep in mind that the bricks are stacked in bond, so they tend to spread loads out; the lintels at your windows each holds up just a small triangle of bricks above it, not the entire wall straight up.

I would not recommend trying to do the brickwork yourself, but if you want more specific information about the sequencing of the demolition/lintel/jamb repair work, you will need to ask a mason.

Enjoy your new windows, and (as always) feel free to post any follow-up questions you may have.  -Ted
