Building Homes or Extensions/Apartment steps

Question
Hi. I live on the second floor of an apartment building. Is there a certain length and width that steps need to be?

Answer
Hi Rob,
Most cities have a building code. The trouble is that they vary a lot from state to state and from city to city.
However unless the owner have a "variance" there are certain codes re: apartments, that have to be followed.
Usually they have to be at least 36" inside the rails and often more,
up to 42". Also if they are supposed to be handicap accessible, they have a whole other set of codes (look up ADA on line).
The rise (height) is usually 7", and the tread is usually 11".
I would go to my local code enforcement officer(at city hall) and all this local info should be readily available.
Best of luck,
Dave
