Building Homes or Extensions/Steel Beams vs. Wood

Question
Building a home on the Rogue River in Oregon - steel beams vs. wood beams with concrete block foundation.  Can you offer any expertise on these two types of structures?

Answer
Hi Dave and Mary, I'm jealous.  I love that area!  My brother lives in Cave Junction, beautiful country!  Anyhow, steel or wood?  Both have their advantages and disadvantages.  Steel can span longer distances with smaller dimensions so if you are limited on height issues and need fewer intermediate supports then steel is a good alternative.  However it is heavy and will need more specialized equipment, (cranes etc.) to maneuver the steel into place.  Also, considering the climate, the steel should probably be galvanized to keep it from rusting over time.

Wood on the other hand is more organic, it is actually harvested and milled in your area.  Douglas fir would be my wood of choice considering the sawmills and availability. The beam sizes may need to be larger depending on how far apart your supports are.  Wood is easier to work with using standard carpentry tools.  Steel, depending on the design may need to be welded and embeds may need to be poured into the concrete to weld or bolt the beams to.

So I guess to answer your question.  I work with steel and wood every day.  Both are good.  In your case I think I would opt for the wood mainly because of the organic nature of it and the setting where you have chosen to build .  But that is it.  It's more of a personal choice because both systems, when designed properly, are viable methods of construction.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
