Building Homes or Extensions/Support Beam

Question
I have a balloon frame house with a totally open floorplan (no walls)and the second floor deck is secured to a 12x1 which goes around the parameter of the house. The 12x1 is secured to the 2x4 s of the side of the house with bolts. I want to have more support than that - so I am looking for a metal or wooden beam I can put under the 12x1 without having to pad out the walls another 3/4". I was picturing something like a metal beam with a 90 degree metal piece at the top that would stick out 3/4" and wrap up around the 12x1 about 3/4" holding it up as well as holding it in place. Is there such a beam? Thanks

Answer
Hi Connie, a 1X12 ledger?  Are you sure it's not a 2 x 12?  Plus I'm not sure what you are asking.  You want a beam but you don't want it to stick out past the ledger?  If the ledger is only 1" thick then what you want is a beam 1" thick also?  Is the existing construction showing signs of settling or the wood showing signs of breaking or being overly stressed?  It is common in balloon framed homes to have the joists are attached to the studs also.  Is this the case in your home?  If so, the studs are taking some of the bearing weight also.  Please write back with some answers to my concerns ans I can advise further.  Sincerely bruce e johnson
