Building Homes or Extensions/Wood and ceramic tile flooring and particle board

Question
I am buying a 1979 home that has "Redx"(sp?) sub-flooring.  To my eye it is dense particle board and one builder told me when it was popular you almost had to wear a flak jacket to protect yourself from flying nails it was so hard.

Anyway, during the planned remodeling of the house we wish to put 3/4" solid hardwood floor in part of the house, ceramic tile in some areas, and the rest carpeting.

The carpeted areas are easy so the main questions have to do with how I prepare for the installation of the hardwood and ceramic tile.

Must I replace the particle board with 3/4" plywood where I plan on hardwood and ceramic tile?

OR,

Can the cement backer board simply be installed over the particle board (of course with proper screw attachment)?

AND,

Would a 3/8" plywood overlayment work over the particle board in the hardwood areas?

Any thought/comments would be appreciated.

I live in high desert with very low humidity.

Regards,
Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,
Ideally you should replace the particle board before placing the tile.
As far as the wood goes, it may be ok to use because of the length of time it has been down and lack of humidity.
You probably have done this already, but you need to think about the different levels of flooring when adding underlayment...
Best of luck, mail me if you need more,

Dave
