Building Homes or Extensions/bigger opening in cinder block

Question
I have a garage door that is 8 ft wide X 7ft high. I would like to open this up to 9ft X 7ft to install a wider garage door. The wall is made of cinder block. Just above the door is 2 cinder blocks high before it meets the rafters. Should I cut 6 inches of each side or can I cut 12 inches off only one side, also I am not sure if there is a header above the door. What would be the best way to go about doing this project.
Thank You

Answer
Frank, the existing masonry is filled with steel and concrete to be able to span the distance.  It is a unique method of crating headers with masonry.  It will be fairly difficult to remove the grouted block.  You must have new bearing and new lintel to carry the load.  It can be done with a steel lintel or by using hairpin block with concete and steel reinforcement.  This project is well beyond DIY, consult a brick layer.
