Building Homes or Extensions/header size for pavilion

Question
Hi,
We are building a pavilion off of or pool area.  The slab is 16 X 24 with 4 6 x 6 posts spanning the 24 feet and counting the 4 corners 3 down the sides of the 16 foot.  We are using trusses for the roof and have ordered 13 of them and the will be at 24 " center.  The question I have is weather double 2 x 8's lag bolted to the 6 x 6's ( which are 7.5 feet apart) is strong enough for that span ?
Thanks !

Answer
Tammy-

The required size of your header depends on the snow load in your area, the type of roofing that you are using, and the total roof width (16' plus overhangs).  According to the 2006 IRC, 2-2x8 will be too small.  Depending on the factors listed above, you will need a minimum header size of 2-2x10, possibly greater.  If you take your plans in to a good lumberyard, they should be able to assist you with beam sizing and proper attachment to columns.  Good luck,  Ted.
