Building Homes or Extensions/insulation

Question
QUESTION: Dave,
Can you use Tyvek as an insulation over claps for a vinyl go over?

ANSWER: Hi Robin,
You can use tyvek, but its not an insulation, just a vapor barrier.
I would use either the "fan fold" insulation or a foil faced rigid foam insulation. Tape the seams on either one.
Anything else... ask me again, best of luck, Dave

QUESTION: Dave,
Should you use insulation on top of the Tyek when you go over the claps or are the old claps themselves enough insulation? If you do cedar claps do you need insulation and Tyvek? Which do you prefer cedar claps or vinyl claps?

ANSWER: If you use any insulation, don't use any wrap.
The old clapboards are very little insulation.
Cedar clapboards have no more R-value than the existing and vinyl has none.
I prefer cedar or anything more than vinyl. It just has a "commercial" look...Just a personal thing...

QUESTION: Dave,
Then tyvek is all you need when residing with new cedar claps? What is the life span on cedar claps?
Thanks.
Robin

Answer
Yes, if you're not insulating, thats all you need...but putting new clapboards over old is not a great idea, youneed to remove the old ones or the cedar (or whatever) will look horrible.
If you use vinyl, you don't need to remove the old siding.
