Building Homes or Extensions/Adding a mud room

Question
I want to attach a mud room with full walls to my existing entrance from my attached garage.  The floor would need to be built on 4 x 4 posts which would sit on the concrete garage floor. The floor would be approximately 3 feet of the floor to be even to the entrance door form the garage. When I attach the mud room walls to the existing interior garage walls, should I expect movement.  The home is 20 years old.

Answer
NOrm, is the attached garage condiioned?  YOu are adding interior conditioned space to the house.  Code would suggest you remove the garage floor under your extension and create a footing tied well into the existing footing.  Frame or pour this floor to function as part of the house.

You can probably get by with your plan, but not through plan & review and inspection.  The garage floor is subject to different movement than the house proper.  If you have a building department ask them for clarification.
