Building Homes or Extensions/Finishing out Hardiboard in a Bathroom

Question
What is the best way to finish hardiboard walls in a bath? Our contractor installed it and now has vanished. Do we need to tape and float like drywall?

Thanks

Answer
Shirley,

I'm sorry to hear about your disappearing contractor.  Generally, hardiboard is installed as tile backer, only in locations that will be tiled.  "Green" drywall is often used in bathroom areas that will be painted.  If you don't want to put tile on your tile board, you could:

a. Drywall over it.  A thinner drywall (perhaps 3/8") may be less troublesome for your trim and windows/doors.

b. Tape the hardiboard joints, and skimcoat with a clay-plaster or cementitious-plaster.  This requires a skilled plasterer for good results, but will be a nice durable surface.  Plaster can be integrally colored as well.

Good luck, and feel free to post any followups you may have.  -Ted
