Building Homes or Extensions/kitchen extensions
Expert: Dave Johnson - 9/12/2008
QuestionWe are purchasing a home, in which the kitchen area needs to be expanded. There are french doors leading out to the deck, which can be taken down and an addition (e.g. breakfast area built). We were looking at putting in a sun room as the extension, say 10 by 20. What would the cost / time be to build a real (brick / siding) addition versus putting in a pre-fab addition that is advertised in such sites as on this site.

thanks
AnswerHi Grace,
The comparative cost between the two would probably be significant as would the time. Nearly all sun-room additions are pre paneled or pre fabricated and take much less time to install. They are also less expensive.
On the other hand the on site building can be much more custom built
and are most often sturdier construction.
Personally, I think the way to go is on site if time and money can be afforded.
Please search for competent builders in your area by asking neighbors, local lumber yards and even the local town/city offices.
Best of luck,
Dave
