Building Homes or Extensions/Foundation for concrete steps

Question
We are working on an addition to our home which includes a new back entrance with a landing and two steps. Block foundation walls were constructed below grade (we are on fill dirt) and a concrete pad (approx 4 by 6) has been poured at ground level.  My question is this:  Can the steps extend beyond the concrete pad or must the landing and steps all be contained on the concrete pad?

Answer
Hi Debbie the steps can extend beyond the pad if you provide a proper base for them which may require an additional strip of concrete or some sort of cantilevered construction that utilizes the existing concrete pad for the support but extends beyond the pad.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
