Building Homes or Extensions/Heat N Glo firplace insert - draft

Question
I have a Heat N glo fireplace insert in the 6 year old home I bought. It is model # SL-750-TRC
There is a strong draft coming from the bottom grill of the fireplace. It is vented directly out the back with no elbows (I can see daylight). It is safe to place insulation under the firebox (unfaced fiberglass) behind the grille. So long as it doesn't enter the opening directly below the pilot and burner area I would assume this would be fine?

Answer
Hi Steve, I don't recommend closing up any vents or blocking any openings to the outside that are part of the fireplace's construction.  This opening may be needed or required for proper ventilation (either by providing fresh air or by exhausting carbon monoxide).  By obstructing it you may be in danger of it not venting properly and causing a build up of carbon monoxide gases within your home which could be deadly. If you have the gas main turned off and are not using the fireplace then it would be okay while the unit is not in service to plug the hole but once the main is turned back on and someone can turn the fireplace on the obstruction would have to be removed.  I hope this information helps, feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
