Building Homes or Extensions/Loft Load Bearing

Question
Hi Bruce,

I'd like to know whether I can convert my loft space into a liveable area (spare bedroom). I am very curious whether there is enough load bearing on the original joists to cope with the extra weight.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi Nathan, It's hard to say without knowing what your loft is built out of just exactly what kind of load it will bear.  Chances are good that if it is just an unfinished loft with actual stair access that it was built to be finished later and therefore can be used for living area.  Floor joist size will be the big factor.  If the ceiling joists/floor joists are just 2x4 or 2x6 with long spans then this area is not meant to be used for a living space without increasing the joist size.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincererly bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
