Question
I was wondering as I see so many new homes being built that they are left on grundgy, dirty, rust marked foundations which I feel take away from a new home.I also notice this on most other structures  too.Is there a reason that you would know, why the foundations arent painted with something to dress it up.And if they can be painted what would you recomend.thank you for your time

Answer
Hi ed, a lot of what you see is iron rust caused by poorly aimed irrigation systems and water with a lot of iron in it.  But to answer your question, yes you can use a concrete stain or even paint for that matter.  A good block filler is used first to prep the concrete or masonry, filling in pits and small impressions.  If the wall is really rough you can use a concrete topping mix such as pavecrete.  Mix up a fairly wet or loose mixture and with a large sponge, sponge the mixture on the wall in circular motions.  This cement based product has a latex bonding agent in it and will adhere nicely.  By doing this you fill any voids and give yourself a good base to paint or stain.  Even after doing this I recommend a good block filler as your primer base..I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
