Building Homes or Extensions/Raising Floor Level

Question
Hi Dave;
Our house is built on a cement slab in California.  We have a sunken living room that we want to bring up to the same level as our other floor; we need to raise the floor elevation up 6".  The concrete is currently carpeted and the new floor will be carpet, but the floor that we are matching is tile.  What is the best way to accomplish this task?

Thanks,
Dale

Answer
Hi Dale,
You need to first calculate the thickness of the new floor framing members.
For example: If the difference is exactly 6", the new framing will be 6" minus the thickness of the subfloor and the carpet (with carpet pad?) Assuming the subfloor is 3/4" ADVANTEK t&g and the carpet is 1/2" with a 1/2" pad, you would need floor "joists" of
4 1/4" thickness.

If there is any chance of moisture, you may want to use pressure treated lumber.

Remove the old carpet, rip down as many 2x6 joists as you need to 4 1/4", lay them 16" on center. and attach them securely to the concrete to stop any future squaking. Add the Advantek and secure with screws and a good construction adhesive.
Apply carpeting.

You may or may not want a "transition" piece between carpeting and tile, but is not necessary.

Best of luck, and if you need more...ask.

Dave
