Building Homes or Extensions/West window energy efficiency

Question
Hi -I've set about making my home more energy efficient, while also keeping it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  I've done OK with the winter part, and want to attack the summer before it arrives.  I live in Central Illinois and my 1968 ranch style home has 4 windows facing the west/  The sun hits them full force for several hours, and the house heats up.  I've installed a 15 SEER central air unit to replace a 10 SEER unit, but want to also save in other ways.  It seems to me I could do something to reduce the suns heat coming in in the afternoon.  I've read about exterior shutters, exterior bamboo shades, and stuff like that, but don't know what is effective and what isn't.  Also read about using a dark sunscreen on the glass.  Have you any advice on what is most cost effective and energy effective?

Many thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Kevin,
First, go to www.solargard.com or www.cpfilms.com  for a new method that is far better than the older dark films.
I haven't yet used this stuff, but colleaques have and say it is very user friendly  a moisture activated thin film applied with a squeegie...
Best of luck!
