Building Homes or Extensions/building a fireplace in an existing chimney

Question
Pat, we are renovating our kitchen and I would like to have a fireplace, (gas insert) built into the chimney that runs up the interior wall of the kitchen.  Is this an easy thing to do or is it too involved?  It is a brick chimney from the basement up through the roof, seems to be in good shape.

Answer
I am NOT Pat.

Barbara, I guess all things are possible.  There must have been a reason for the existing chimney, they didn't just put them in for decoration.  Find out what else uses or did use in  the past to know abut sizing.  Find out if this chimney is lined with fire brick or bire rated tile.  It may not have been designed to deal with the heat and creosote of a wood burning fireplace.  Check with a local fire place builder/supplier to see what size unit could be used with the size flue that you have.  It takes a fair sized chimney to deal with a wood fire.
