Question
I am building an exterior split-level staircase extending to a second story deck.Iam useing 4x4  post for my landing deck.Is there a certain height or limit before I would have to use 6x6?.I am building in baltimore city.My landing is 4ftx4ft.If so please let me know the spec,s THANK YOU,SINCERLY JOEY!

Answer
Hi Joey, I am not familiar with your local building codes, however, 4x4's can be used up to pretty much any height with the proper bracing to keep them from bending or bowing.  A single level split staircase should easily be supported by 4x4s..I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
