Building Homes or Extensions/below grade

Question
What does it mean when a fire says my basement has to be below   2 1/2 feet below grade?

Answer
Hi CP, not sure what you mean by "fire" in this question.  But normally grade is the surround ground around a building.  So the term 2 1/2 feet below grade would be 2 1/2 feet into the ground.  It sounds like you are dealing with a building code that may require the footings of the foundation to be below the frost line in your area.  Usually in deep frost areas it is commone to go ahead and make your foundation a basement foundation since the footings have to be 2 1/2 feet deep at a minimum..I hope this information helps, feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
