Building Homes or Extensions/building codes

Question
Hello and thank you for your help and time. My question is how do you get the building codes for putting and addition on to a house. I know how to do the physical part of it just don't know how to find all the rules to do it to codes. Thanks again

Answer
Mike,

You should contact your local building official for the current codes in effect in your area.  The most prevalent code is the International Residential Code, or IRC, which has been adopted by most (perhaps all by this point) US states.  States and municipalities routinely add their own code provisions in addition to (or in place of) the IRC.  If indeed the IRC applies in your area, you can purchase it online.

Best of luck with your addition.
