Question
I am building an addition to my house witch involves me connecting a slab which is a 10 x 16 and connect on two sides of the excisting slab. What are some things I need to know about connecting the two together? How deep does my footing need to be?

Answer
Hi corey, first of all if you have good soil conditions, the pad is well compacted prior to pourng the new slab you really don't need to tie the slabs to each other.  If there are settling issues you can drill into the existing slab every two feet and 6" deep and epoxy short pieces of #4 or #5 rebar into it and then pour your new slab aroung those pieces of rebar to key it together..How deep or wide your footing needs to be kinda depends on your soil conditions etc.  A typical thickened edge is twelve inches deep and 16-24 inches wide with two #5 rebar set on chairs for reinforcing..I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
