Building Homes or Extensions/installing a header beam for a bump out

Question
HI,

I'm demolishing a load baring kitchen wall that is 15 feet long.  At the 9 foot mark is a 16 inch bump out that runs for the remaining 6 feet of wall.  The bump out is two stories tall with a bathroom on the second level of the bump out.  I'm adding a 15'x15' addition to the new opening with a vaulted ceiling.  I know I can install two header beams (one for the bump out and a second header beam for the rest of the wall), and tie them together if I leave the 16 inch bump out wall in place at the 9 foot mark.  However, I do not want a pillar or section of wall within the open space between the kitchen and new addition.  How I can I install a single header beam that will span the entire 15' opening, move the load to the ends, and support the second level of the bump out and the rest of the load baring wall.  The bump out sticks out 16 inches from the main house load baring wall.

Thanks very much!

Answer
Jim, I think any solution will require technical information from a structural engineer that can see the situation, and if you are in a code/inspection area, I'm sure they will require a stamped drawing.

One idea that comes to mind would be to create two separate beams about 16" apart - one that carries the bump out and another that carries the non bump out portion.  They can each clear span with no interbediate post.  They may require a flat spot in the cathedral or other solution for the finish ceiling.

Another idea would be to install the beam at the main outside wall line and allow the bump out to be supported as a cantilever beyond the wall line.  At 16", it should be well within the limits for a cantilever.

withut being able to see the situation, I can give no advice on how to handle roofing and flashing.

I hope this gives you a few ideas to pursue.
