Building Homes or Extensions/material for front porch

Question
Do you think that using old oak posts from an estate would work on a porch for a frame home?  The home is only 1000 sq.ft. and the posts are 6in.wide at the bottom and end up 4in. wide at the top and 55 in. tall?  Please let me know asap as I am contemplating buying them and don't want to make a mistake in doing so if they are not recommended. Thanks.

Answer
Esther, I would not use red oak outdoors.  White oak does better, but I would still not consider it to be a normal outdoor material.  I'm not sure how you would use a 55" post.  If this is meant to hold up the porch, it would require brick or concrete pedestals to make use of the oak posts.  All things considered, I think I would pass.

As far as asking if they are strong enough - sure.
