Question
i am opening up a gable end wall that has a finished garage on other side of it to extend the living room.. there is 2x6 ceiling joists (9) with sheetrock hung from it in the garage and the wall studs go from the bottom plate which is set on foundation wall up to top plate then studs on top of that to the two end rafters.the opening is 10 feet.My plan was to cut back the joists remove the wall studs insert a microlam and teco the 2x6 to the microlam. question is what size micro lam.

Answer
Hi bill, for a ten foot span I would use at least a 9.5" microlam beam, or a double 2x10..your microlam supplier can also offer advice as to span tables of the particular brand of laminated beam..I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
