Building Homes or Extensions/porch posts

Question
If we want to build a small house (1100sq.ft.) and want to add a front porch (10x10) how many columns are needed to support it?  This would be a frame home. Would 2 solid oak plain posts (6in. from bottom to 4in at the top and 55 in. tall work?

Answer
Hi Esther, are you talking about just a porch floor? A post 55" tall wouldn't work to support a porch roof because of the height.  A 4x4 post in each corner of the porch would work if you use heavy enough beams on top of the posts.  For a 10' span you will need at least a 4x10 carrier beam and 2x8 minimum floor joists..I hope  this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
