Question
We are having a cabin built, the location is on a hillside so the contractor had to step the footers. They do not intend to make this one continuous pour of concrete,is this a suitable footer design for a block foundation?

Answer

stepped footing
Hi Jeff, it is imperitive that your footers be continuous and connected together especially on a hillside structure.  This doesn't mean necessarily that the footings need to be poured continuously but they do need to have continous reinforcing to tie the whole thing together.  I am attaching a simple drawing showing how stepped footings should be handled..I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
